Fire investigators say a blaze that forced more than two dozen people from their homes started in the kitchen of a second floor apartment in Tampa. The state fire marshal believes unattended cooking started the fire. The fire broke out after 12:30 Monday morning at Waterman’s Crossing Apartments
at 4515 N Rome Ave. in Tampa. Soon after firefighters arrived, they called for more help because the fire was spreading from the second to third floor.
By 2 a.m. most of the major flames were out, but firefighters continued to knock down hot spots for hours. The fire caused an estimated $310,000 damage. Units in the building “I” suffered fire, smoke, heat and water damage. Surrounding buildings “J” and “K” received minor heat and water damage. The Red Cross opened Oak Grove Church of God as a shelter for those displaced. No one was hurt. Officials closed North Rome Avenue between West Johnson Avenue and West Eldred Drive for over an hour Monday morning to clean up after the blaze.
